VAALCO Energy (EGY)

Unlike most small independent oil outfits in the U.S., Vaalco Energy prefers to look for oil in faraway places, like the Atlantic Ocean off West Africa. Increased production from its main field off the shores of Gabon -- and sharply higher oil prices -- have boosted sales by 8¹/₂ times since 2002 turned a big loss in 2001 into steadily increasing profits. Last year, the Houston-based company earned $29.2 million on sales of $84.9 million. Its stock, which didn't even fetch 20 cents a share in mid-2000, has been as high as $7.82 this year, though it's slipped from that April peak to about $6.50. With stronger reserves and a steady cash flow, Vaalco plans to expand its production in Gabon and is placing new bets in Angola and the North Sea. For a little guy, it gets around.

Executive Bio

Robert Gerry III has been CEO and chairman of Vaalco Energy, a publicly traded independent oil and gas company, since August, 1997. Gerry served as president and COO of Nuevo Energy from its formation in March, 1990, until 1994. Before that, Gerry served as senior vice-president of Energy Assets International (EAIC), starting in January, 1989. For 10 years prior to joining EAIC, Gerry was active as an independent investor concentrating on energy. He served as vice-chairman of Nuevo Energy from February, 1994, to August, 1997. He has been a director of Plains Exploration & Production since May, 2004. He has been a director of Vaalco Energy since 1997. He also serves as a trustee of Texas Children's Hospital. He served as a director of Nuevo Energy from 1990 to May 2004 and was a member of the audit and compensation committees. He served as a trustee of Texas Children's Hospital for 15 years.
