We are pleased to report that BusinessWeek's Asian Edition has received the Society of Publishers in Asia's 2001 Award for Editorial Excellence in English-language magazines. The awards, presented in Hong Kong on June 5, were established in 1999 to honor excellence and encourage editorial vitality throughout the region. This is our third SOPA award and our second for overall English-language magazine.

The SOPA judges cited BusinessWeek's "excellent breadth and depth of coverage," based on the three complete issues pictured below (Jan. 17, Nov. 6, and Nov. 27, 2000). You can browse through these issues on BusinessWeek Online.

SOPA recognizes the efforts of our entire Asia team: Mark L. Clifford, Brian Bremner, Dexter Roberts, Robert Neff, Michael Shari, Manjeet Kripalani, Moon Ihlwan, Frederik Balfour, Bruce Einhorn, Ken Belson, Chester Dawson, Irene Kunii, Tomoko Takahashi, and Miguella Lam; and in New York, Robin Ajello, Pete Engardio, and Julia Lichtblau, under the direction of Deputy Managing Editor Christopher Power and Senior Editor Michael Serrill.

Back in New York, Beijing Bureau Chief Dexter Roberts has been singled out with a T.W. Wang Award for excellence in U.S. media coverage of China and Chinese-American issues for three Asian Edition cover stories on China in the age of globalization. The awards, in their inaugural year, are managed by Queens College, City University of New York, and World Journal, a Chinese-American newspaper. In April, Roberts was cited for best business reporting in magazines from the Overseas Press Club of America, along with our "Global Capitalism" team, led by Senior News Editor Pete Engardio and Senior Writer Rose Brady, who were cited in the magazine reporting category.

On June 23, The South Asian Journalists Assn. will present Bombay Bureau Chief Manjeet Kripalani with second prize for the outstanding story on South Asia in the new media category. Her BusinessWeek Online commentary was on U.S.-India relations.

All in all, it has been a great year for BusinessWeek in Asia and we hope a beneficial one for you, our readers, as well.
