Snapshot: Dave Duffield

BORN
Sept. 21, 1940, Cleveland.
EDUCATION
BS, science and electrical engineering; MBA; both from Cornell.
CAREER
His first job was as a low-level engineer at IBM. Went on to start five businesses, including, most recently, the software company Workday.
BIG SCORE
Duffield made almost all his $1.2 billion fortune from creating PeopleSoft. Roughly half came when Oracle bought the company in December, 2004.
FAMILY
He and his wife, Cheryl, have nine children, from 6 to 40; six grandchildren; three dogs; two fish; and a parrot.
BRING YOUR FAMILY TO WORK
Duffield's wife, brother, and two children worked at PeopleSoft. Son Mike and daughter Amy followed him to Workday.
PHILANTHROPY
Created Maddie's Fund, a pet rescue foundation, and gave it $300 million. When he was poor, Duffield made a promise to his "first child," a schnauzer named Maddie, that if he ever made money he'd make life better for her kind.
