Banner Cell-Phone Season

Mobile-phone makers shipped a record 245.2 million units in the fourth quarter of last year -- a 19.3% increase from a year earlier, according to researcher IDC. And no company benefited from the bonanza more than Nokia and Motorola, the two largest wireless handset manufacturers. Both managed to gain substantial market share from smaller rivals like LG.

What gives? Nokia's S50 platform continued to gain traction and Motorola had strong sales of its ultra-slim RAZR phones, particularly a pink model that was popular during the holidays.
