AMD Treads on Intel Turf

Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) continued a slow but steady erosion of Intel's dominance of the chip space in the third quarter. AMD's share rose to 17.8% in the period from 15.9% a year earlier, according to a survey by Mercury Research. Intel's share slipped to 80.8%, says Mercury, which tracks sales of chips to PC, server and workstation manufacturers. Dean McCarron, head of Mercury, says AMD typically gets a boost in the third quarter. "AMD's product mix is a little more consumer-oriented than Intel's and so it tends to see a seasonal gain every year," he says. Also helping AMD is its new Turion chip for notebooks.
