Who's Doing What Online?

Virtually everyone who spends time online uses the Internet to send and receive e-mail and search the Web. But what else are Net users doing online? A surprisingly large tally -- 8%, or 11 million people -- have joined some kind of online sports fantasy league, according to The Pew Internet & American Life Project. (It may come as less of a surprise that of those, 86% percent are male).

An even bigger sum -- 16%, or about 21 million people -- have used a Web cam to view a person in a remote place, according to a Pew survey earlier this year. Although that was the first time Pew asked about Web-cam use, the group speculates that use of the devices is on the rise. Why? The cameras are cheap and easy to set up, broadband use is more common and there's a growing number of ways people can use Web cams -- from video conferencing to viewing construction progress to communicating with loved ones in far-flung locales.
