Flocking to Facebook

Facebook is the new social network darling. The college-themed social network has rejected a takeover offer for $750 million and is said to be holding out for as much as $2 billion. The appeal? Facebook lured 12.9 million unique visitors in March, a more than threefold increase from a year earlier, according to ComScore MediaMatrix. Suitors are hunting for the next MySpace, the most-visited network, which fetched $580 million from News Corp. (NWS) last year.

And while Facebook and MySpace skyrocket, other sites are standing still, or losing ground. Xanga and Live Journal had fewer viewers in March. And increasingly they must contend with a roster of arrivistes. Teen sites MyYearbook and Tagged nabbed 3,613,000 and 1,668,000 unique viewers, respectively.
